    [edit] Template:Infobox French commune

Hi, the official figures of the last French census, are out since yesterday: http://www.insee.fr/fr/ppp/bases-de-donnees/recensement/populations-legales/default.asp. The infobox should be changed accordingly. Thanks in advance! --RCS (talk) 17:10, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

A bot, yes, but you could change the template, maybe? (i can't). Thanks! --RCS (talk) 17:14, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Wikipedia of the future

    Yep - sounds great.

I have an idea - it may be a pipe dream, but it's achievable with work. I'd like to see Wikipedia expand to more than 4 million articles by the end of 2009. We're not even at 3 million yet, I know. But if a lot of people buckle down and begin working on it, I think 4 million is doable. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:07, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm afraid you're right. There was a great deal of growth this year, but it seems to have tapered off quite a bit. We'll crack 3 million this year, I'm sure - the question is when? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:14, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps. I don't know, though - I like to hope it'll happen sooner than that. With luck, around March; perhaps a bit later. With work, it can be done. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:32, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Come, now. Can't we get one that uses less energy than that? It is 2009, after all. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:09, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Speaking of editing...any talk pages you'd like me to create? I've got a whole weekend to fiddle around with AWB... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:29, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
OK, I'll do that tonight. And don't worry, I haven't forgotten the French communes.
Speaking of blues - ever hear of Arthur Crudup? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:34, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't know Delta blues from any other (Piedmont, I believe?) I just always loved the name of the town in which he died. Been there, actually...it's not much more than a wide place in the highway. Didn't stop me from buying one of his recordings... --19:56, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Speaking of Southern music...ever heard any recordings of Sacred Harp music? It's some of the most fascinating stuff I know. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:07, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Yeah - the style never really took off outside of the States, with rare exception ("Amazing Grace" is actually an old shape-note hymn, believe it or not). There's a whole database of them online: here's a couple of my favorites.
If they sound amateurish, that's deliberate; they're meant to be sung by amateur groups.
(Note: I don't make a habit of calling northerners Yankees. I'm not one of those Lost Cause people...although I have relatives who are.)--User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:35, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Happy New Year!

    Dear Dr. Blofeld,

Wishing you a happy new year, and very best wishes for 2009. Whether we were friends or not in the past year, I hope 2009 will be better for us both.

    Kind regards,

Dear Ernst, let's make of Wikipedia a swan in stead of an Ugly Duckling.
I wish you a very happy New Year and all good for your family, yourself and of course for the quality on Wikipedia.

    [edit] Featured picture

I'm not sure if it meets the size requirements. Other than that...yeah, I think it's splendid. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:22, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. I mean, I'd love to work on an (a?) FP or FA someday, but for now there's so much else to do. Like fixing the redlinks in the article about the Seventy Disciples. OrthodoxWiki is great for that. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:10, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Have fun - I just caught a passle of South Korean footballers that need stubbing and catting that just showed up in the newpages queue. I'm using AWB on them now --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:28, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm still stuck on the disciples. After that, it's back to cleaning up more South Koreans. *sigh* An AWBer's work is never done... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:48, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it's amazing the things you can find online, if only you look in the right places. Like some of the Eastern Shore things I've found on Flickr - who knew anybody'd ever been there? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:44, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Ach, yes - the coverage of Africa on here is pitiful compared to some other places. That and Oceania are the areas I would love to see grow exponentially in the new year. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:00, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah - it's surprising, sometimes, how bad the coverage of certain parts of the country is on here. Like my home state; there are places I know exist, that I've visited or driven through, that haven't been added because nobody's thought to. I mean, I don't like having stubby little articles for every village in every county; I wish they could be larger. But better that than nothing at all. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:14, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Sometime I'll give it a try, then - I'm just not sure what kind of time I'll have to devote to translation in the near future. But I'll keep it at the top of my to-do list. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:37, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Those mechanized translations really aren't as bad as their reputation would have you believe; as long as you keep an eye on what you've got, and clean it up some, it'll probably be fairly accurate. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 00:05, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Dear Ernst

Can I ask you a favour? I'm finally nearly finished with Koh Kong (city) after much procrastination. I would like to try (again) for my first DYK. If you have time, would you do me the reciprocal honour of nominating it? If this one is actually successful I'm gunna get a few more of the provincial towns up to the same standard. Oh, and a happy belated new year! Paxse (talk) 15:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Ramblers Stadium

Hello Dr., Great work on the Namibia articles, the expansion is pretty impressive. I've worked on quite a few Namibia articles. Anyway, Ramblers Stadium is a bit strange. I lived in Windhoek for 4 months last year and never heard of it. I see that Ramblers Stadium does exist but i very much doubt it has a seating capacity of 10,000. Where did you see that?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 01:45, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Julia Roberts

Hi, Yes, I agree the crop is awful but the replacement/former version is worse in my opinion. To have half a person chopped off and Julia clutching onto him, looks ridiculous. We're very limited in what we can work with, but can you suggest anything? Is the crop bad because it's too big or because it's too tight? Could it work if it was "medium cropped" and some of the background was removed? It's surprising that all of the free images of Julia Roberts are of such poor quality. Rossrs (talk) 07:24, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I've tried an enhanced version, cropped differently, straightened etc. I think it looks much better, and although it's small it's bigger than the original but with all the excess clutter removed. Do you think it's better? Rossrs (talk) 10:23, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
I don't see anything substantially different in the quality. Isn't the sole purpose to show what she looks like? I'd rather see her head straight and not leaning into someone's shoulder. Also, I have to say that I can't help but feel offended by the tone of your message particularly "that will do for now". I thought we were discussing this, but that reads as dismissive and final. I change it and ask what you think, and you change it back and say "that will do". I was asking you for an opinion not a decision. Rossrs (talk) 12:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Kyrgyzstan

Excellent - looks nice. I didn't know there was a Kyrgyz Wiki; can you tell if there's much there worth looking at? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

You'd be surprised - MamaHerring was in Kyrgyzstan once, with the State Department, and she still tells the story of driving through the countryside on the bus until coming to a little yurt, out in the middle of nowhere, that was selling 7-Up, Coke, and Belgian chocolate, among other things. No bathrooms, though... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:59, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Hey, now...you're talking to someone who's eaten chapulines and cactus, among other dishes.
Speaking of food...they've just opened a Nepalese restaurant here in DC. Should be interesting; it got a pretty good review in the Post on Sunday. Here's their website. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:16, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah...that's about what the review said. Still, looks interesting...right there next to the Burmese and Indonesian restaurants. We've got plenty to choose from in DC... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:49, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Indonesian food can be quite tasty - there's a good little storefront restaurant in Alexandria that does wonderful dishes. We have quite the selection around here - Ethiopian, West African, Burmese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Peruvian, Nepalese, and various subsets of Mexican, in addition to all the usual suspects. Although it's getting damn near impossible to find a German restaurant around... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:04, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah - I wish there were a few more skins available. I mean, I like what I've got, but it would be nice to have more variety sometimes. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:23, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I like Cologne Blue just fine. I just think that it would be nice if they offered a change; I mean I can fix my internet settings, but what if I want the changes applied only to one site and not all of the ones I visit? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:31, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey - as long as he behaves himself. I don't even want to think about another sex tape scandal... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:40, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
See? This is why I don't watch reality TV. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
One wishes they would jump back off, and fall under the wheels... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:58, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. There's a wonderful show, I don't know if you get it in the UK, called The Soup, which does a marvelous job of skewering most anything to do with that garbage. Among my personal favorite clips is one from My Bare Lady when a contestant seriously says, upon being "exposed" (hurr) to The Taming of the Shrew, that Shakespeare was remarkably corageous...for an Elizabethan woman. I believe the exact phrase was "she had balls". Lady, you have no idea...
The mind, as they say, she boggles. Oy. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:09, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

    Hi Ernst,
Since you liked the articles about the football players, could I please ask you to look at Tenzin Tsering and react also on the talk page so this article will survive? It yet was quite difficult for me to find out the current information on this football player. Thanks, Davin (talk) 18:43, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Yet declined, never mind :-) Davin (talk) 18:44, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] hi!

I'm back from a long break - I was in Spain visiting my boyfriend's family for Christmas. Quite a nice time! I'm glad to see that you fleshed out the Michael Crichton article, and hopefully someone will upload a photo one of these days. Do you know if anyone ever emailed those people I mentioned as possible photo sources in the deletion discussion? As for Cambodia sources, you might actually want to wait a few months or a year or so to do Cambodia articles. They had a census in 2008 (the first since 1998), and the first preliminary results are just beginning to become available. At the moment the national census site is down (this seems to happen a lot - once it even seemed they hadn't renewed the site registration and it was a random godaddy page or something like that!). I hope that they put comprehensive results for the 2008 census up soon, so that I can redo the stats on the Ratanakiri page and finally put it up for FA. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Good work on the Michael Crichton photo! It looks fantastic. Calliopejen1 (talk) 01:02, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Am I supposed to protest the deletion of the guy with the comb over or something? The Bald One White cat 14:34, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
You can make an argument at the IFD as to why the image should be kept. As it's just used for decoration and as Gordon Burns is still alive, it fails WP:NFCC items 1 and 8. Stifle (talk) 14:36, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Why would I make an argument for why it should be kept? I think it should be deleted. The Bald One White cat 14:38, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
You uploaded the image and removed a deletion tag from it. Am I missing something? Stifle (talk) 15:53, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
If you've decided you're happy for it to be deleted, you can just tag it {{db-g7}} or let me know and I'll delete it now. Stifle (talk) 15:54, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

    [edit] Photos

Excellent, on both counts. I tried to find a good, free one of William Carlos Williams, but no success. Which I find hard to believe, given his stature in American letters. There must be something out there, somewhere. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:00, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Very good. I wish I had the time for that sort of thing - alas, duty calls, and all that. I'm doing well to keep up a handful of edits a day. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:24, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Indeed - there's a ton of material out there I'm sure just waiting to be looked at. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 01:27, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
I'll give it a shot in a bit - busy morning, sorry. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:49, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Worse than I expected - I work for a government agency (don't want to go into too much detail on a public forum), and we got a lot of urgent requests in this morning. I'm just now winding down for the day.
List looks great, by the way - if you like I'll try and replace "Naturpark" in those redlinks with "Nature Park" once I get home. (I think I can manage a way to do it with AWB.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:37, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
