    Contents

    [edit] Scope

All disambiguation pages, as described at Wikipedia:Disambiguation.

    [edit] Goals

    1. Make disambiguation pages conform to the manual of style.
    2. Eliminate links to disambiguation pages, such as the massive list at Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, and keep Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/Maintenance under control.

    [edit] How to help

    1. First, please familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia Disambiguation Style, described at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages).
    2. Then, though this project is mainly concerned with editing existing disambiguation pages, it is useful to have read Wikipedia:Disambiguation, which describes guidelines about when and how to disambiguate.
    3. Pick a disambiguation page to work on (see the "Finding disambiguation pages" section below).
    4. Once you have fixed an article, leave an edit summary pointing to this project. This is important as it tells reviewers why the article was changed and gains this project some visibility. Suggested edit summary:
Repaired link to disambiguation page: [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation|please help]]

[edit] Marking disambiguation pages for cleanup

If you find a dab (disambiguation) page which needs cleaning up, but don't have the time to do it right now (or, aren't sure about the best way to attack the problem), you can change the {{disambig}} template at the bottom of the page to be {{disambig-cleanup}} (or change {{hndis}} to {{hndis-cleanup}}). This will add it to Category:Disambiguation pages in need of cleanup, as well as change the descriptive text at the bottom of the page. Describing the problem on the dab page's talk page will help future editors understand what they need to do.

If you want to help clean up dab pages other people have nominated, just visit Category:Disambiguation pages in need of cleanup and pick one to work on. Check the talk page for comments earlier editors may have left. When you fix up a page, please change the {{disambig-cleanup}} back to {{disambig}} (or change {{hndis-cleanup}} back to {{hndis}}). Thanks for helping make Wikipedia a less ambiguous place!

    [edit] Reporting malplaced disambiguation pages

Where there is no primary topic, the disambiguation page should be at "Foo" rather than "Foo (disambiguation)", as stated in Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Generic topic. When you find a malplaced disambiguation page, you can report it at /Malplaced disambiguation pages, or, if you can do so yourself, use the move tool to rename the malplaced page.

    [edit] Disambiguating pages

There are many instances where a new disambiguation page is needed. A collection of auto-generated suggestions is at Wikipedia:Suggestions for name disambiguation; currently, there is no pending work listed at that page.

    [edit] Disambiguation pages with hatnotes

Most disambiguation pages do not need hatnotes, except for {{confused}} and {{selfref}} on base-name dabs. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation/Disambiguation pages with hatnotes for a list to investigate.

    [edit] Templates

Disambiguation templates are listed under the "general" category of template message. Most of these templates do not have usage guidelines associated with them on their Talk pages, however, some direction is provided for hatnotes at Wikipedia:Hatnote#Hatnote templates and Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation links.

    " * " = no usage guidelines

    On disambiguation pages:

    • Topic-specific templates - these bring the disambiguation page to the attention of editors knowledgeable in the topic (through category includes or WikiProjects and often include topic specific language

On set index articles. Note that set index articles are similar to, but are not the same thing as disambiguation pages:

    • {{SIA}} * – The generic set index template.
    • {{Mountainindex}} – For set index articles about mountain names.
    • {{Shipindex}} – For lists of ships with the same or similar names.

On anthroponymy list articles. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy for specific guidelienes. There are also not disambiguation pages, although short lists may be embedded on disambiguation pages until they are long enough to split off.

    • {{Given name}} – For given name pages or sections of disambiguation pages that list people by given names.
    • {{Surname}} – For pages or sections of disambiguation pages that list people by family name.

Optional Wiktionary templates, for use on disambiguation pages:

Lookfrom, for use on disambiguation pages where the term is used to form compound terms, this link lists all pages that begin with the specified term:

    • The lookfrom template can also be wrapped in the {{selfref}} template to mark it as a self-reference:
      • {{selfref|* {{lookfrom|term}}|}}

Hatnotes, for use on articles where reference to a disambiguation page is useful

Inline, for use within article text where a link needs correcting, but it is unclear where it should link

Project banner, for use on the disambiguation article's talkpage

    Userbox, for your own userpage
