귀스타브 플로베르

귀스타브 플로베르 (Gustave Flaubert, 1821년 12월 12일 - 1880년 5월 8일)는 프랑스 출신의 19세기 소설가이다.

플로베르가 (한국에서) 사실주의자로서 유명해진 것은 일물일어설(一物一語說)때문인데 그가 언급한 원문은 아래와 같다.

“	누가 나를 설복시키지 않는 한, 나는 근본적인 형태에서 분리된 한 문장이란 의미가 없는 두 단어라고 주장할 것이다 ; 아름다운 형식이 없는 아름다운 생각은 없다. 그 반대의 경우도 마찬가지다. 예술의 세계에서 아름다움은 형태로부터 스며나온다. 우리의 세계에선 그것에서 사랑과 유혹이 나오는 것처럼. 이것은 네가 한 물체에서 그것을 형성하는 질-즉 색깔, 면적, 견고성 등-을 제거할 수 없는 것과 마찬가지다. 텅 빈 추상으로 떨어짐 없이, 한 단어로 그 문장을 훼손시킴 없이, 생각에서 형태를 제거할 수 없다. 왜냐하면 생각은 형태에 의해서만 존재하기 때문이다. 형태가 없는 생각을 상상해보라. 그것은 불가능하다 ; 생각을 표현하지 않는 형태도 불가능하긴 마찬가지다.	”

즉 영어로 하면 The idea exists only by virtue of its form. 이라는 부분이 일물일어설에 해당하는 것인데 사실 한국에서는 그의 일물일어설이 유명하지만 정작 해외에서는 그 점이 거의 언급되지 않고있다.
